International relations, as an areas of studies, falls within the educational area of the social sciences and humanities. Learning about international relations as a field of research, knowledge and education concerning a range of international phenomena and processes is interdisciplinary in nature. It explores a variety of aspects of international affairs that are of interest to social sciences, including political, socioeconomic and normative aspects, as well as those of interest to the humanities, including philosophical, historical and ethical aspects. It analyses the functioning of institutions (such as states, economies and international organisations) in the international sphere, but also concerns itself with the values embodied by these relations and the culture of international affairs.

Overall educational goals as well as the potential employment and continuing education of graduates

The goal of the programme is to provide education concerning a range of various international phenomena and processes. The programme is interdisciplinary in character with the students familiarizing themselves with a variety of political, socioeconomic, normative, philosophical, historical and ethical aspects of international affairs. Apart from general subjects such as philosophy, sociology, computing and two foreign languages, the students will also gather knowledge regarding international political, economic and cultural relations as well as regarding economics, world religions and international law. Graduates will be able to seek employment in institutions and companies maintaining foreign contacts and dealing with international cooperation in political, economic or cultural areas, with particular focus on entities active in the region.

During candidate evaluation, the following will be taken into account:

Candidates qualify for the second-cycle degree on the basis of the required documents that they submit.

During the course, students implement the following thematic modules

Theory and Method Module -This module expands the students’ knowledge of theoretical approaches to international relations and the methodology of the humanities and social sciences.

Political Science Module - This module presents classical and modern political thought as well as the basics of international security.

Legal Module - This module introduces legal considerations, including the EU’s economic regulations, diplomatic and consular law, and international human rights protection.

Economics Module - This module’s concerns focus on issues connected to developmental economics, the particulars of international financial markets and international competitiveness.

History and Culture Module- This module explores the specificity of the modern world in the historical context. The subject – Historical Causes of Modern Cultural Diversity – is taught in a foreign language.

American Studies - Elective module. Focusses on American politics and its role in international relations, including such issues as political history, political systems, political parties and the Presidency.

Intercultural Communication - Elective module. Focusses on the principles of planning and organising activities in a complex cultural environment, developed the ability to communicate between cultures and an awareness of cultural differences.

Elective Subject Module - Module which contains elective subjects dealing with selected specific issues within international relations.

Diploma Subjects - Master’s Seminar 1-4 – the aim of the seminar is to prepare the student to write their master’s thesis within the area of modern international relations. Seminar participants – with the help of their supervisor – formulate a topic, locate and select literature and primary sources, determine the structure of the diploma, and finally prepare and present the individual chapters. The students learn to analyse texts that are fundamental for the thesis in accord with the regulations that govern their use as well as in the context of critical discussion.

Language Module

Modern foreign language – education in a foreign language, preparing the students to communicate with a variety of interlocutors at a B2+ CERF level.

Foreign language labs – specialist language classes providing practice in translating texts concerning international relations and writing own texts in a foreign language.

Profile of a graduate of International Relations

Any graduate of international relations who has completed the masters degree course, as compared to a graduate of the bachelors degree course, will have obtained a broader, interdisciplinary foundation of knowledge regarding the international aspects of politics, economics and law. They will have come to be familiar with the theory and history of international relations as well as their current form. They will possess analytical and methodological abilities that make it possible to work in positions which require rational decisions and opinions. The graduate will have obtained the theoretical grounding necessary to undertake the third-cycle, doctoral studies.

Specialisation in American Studies will have provided knowledge regarding American politics and its role in international relations, including such issues as political history, political systems, political parties and the Presidency. The graduate will be ready to work in positions that require them to be familiar with the nature and particular role of the United States of America in the modern world.

Specialisation in Intercultural Communication will have provided knowledge regarding the principles of planning and organising activities in a complex cultural environment, developed the ability to communicate between cultures and an awareness of cultural differences. The graduate will have obtained knowledge and abilities necessary to work in institutions, companies and organisations which require familiarity with the causes and nature of cultural differences.

Admission rules

Documents

• a personal questionnaire (downloaded from the IRK),
• an application form for a student ID (downloaded from the IRK),
• a secondary school graduation certificate or a higher education diploma (together with apostille/legalised and their translation),
• an ID (e.g. passport or residence permit) – to present during an inspection,
• document confirming the knowledge of a English language at least at B1 level confirmed by a certificate, a diploma of graduation or a confirmation from the university obtained during the recruitment process that the candidate's knowledge of a foreign language is sufficient for them to study in that language;
• Candidates are exempted from having to produce the document when:

1. the foreign language was the language of instruction at the secondary school or completed university programme,
2. the foreign language is their mother tongue,
3. the candidate passed the maturity exam in a foreign language at extended level with a minimum of 80% score,
4. the candidate passed a foreign language examination at B1 level during their studies and this is shown in the diploma supplement,

• a medical certificate stating that there are no contraindications to study in fields where students are exposed to harmful, strenuous or hazardous factors to health,
• evidence of possession:

1. a health insurance policy for a given academic year of education in Poland, or
2. The European Health Insurance Card, or
3. public health insurance, or
4. confirmation of the insurer's coverage of the costs of treatment on the territory of the Republic of Poland for a minimum amount of €30,000,

and in the absence of the documents referred to in points 1-4, he/she will declare that a copy will be provided before the first class begins,

• consent of parents or legal guardians to take up studies in the case of minors.

If the candidate's documents are submitted by a third party, he/she should present a power of attorney to submit the documents and his/her own identity document and a copy of the candidate's identity card for inspection.
